Gov't o step-up fight against galamsey despite Prestea-Nsuta accident

Deputy Minster of Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu-Bio says rescue efforts are still ongoing to recover 15 other bodies of illegal miners trapped under a deep pit at Nsuta near Prestea in the Western Region.  

He lauded the support received so far toward rescuing survivors of the accident.  

Mr. Owusu Bio was quick to add that though the accident is unfortunate, it occurred due to the blatant disregard for safety rules by miners at the site. 

Speaking to GBC's George Asekere on Radio Ghana's Current Affairs Program, "Behind the News", Mr. Owusu Bio also said the accident does not mean the fight against galamsey has been lost. 

Its a signal that government must switch to phase two of the action plan which involves massive deployment of military personnel to galamsey sites to flush them out aggressively.
