One person, identified as a first year student of the Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem Nursing School at Tafo Nhyiaeso in Kumasi who was among students who were involved in a fatal accident near Abono in the Bosomtwe district of Ashanti yesterday has been retrieved dead. She was trapped under the bus that was transporting the nurse trainees but developed a brake failure and fell into a deep ditch. Rescuers involving the police, fire service and residents of Abono were able to reacue 42 of the people involved in the accident but one of them who had been trapped under the bus could not be rescued until this afternoon. Speaking to Radio Ghana, the Kuntanase District Police Commander, ASP Obo Takyi, said it took the combined efforts of the police and Abono townfolks to retrieve the female nurse trainee from wreckage of the bus in the ditch which is about 150 metres deep. ASP Obo Takyi said the body has been deposited at the St. Michael's Hospital's morgue at Pramso in the Bosomtwe district. He said two of the critically injured have been sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for emergency medicare with a few others on admission at the Kuntanase and St. Michael's hospitals in the same district. ASP Obo Takyi said majority of the victims made up of students, lecturers and the driver, have been treated and discharged from the various hospitals. The District Police Commander however express worry about the inability of the school's authorities to give the exact number of occupants of the bus which was transporting the nurse trainees to Lake Bosomtwe on an excursion. Adua Kobi Serwaa Ampem Nursing Training School is a privately owned nursing training institution. The accident occurred at about 5.30 pm yesterday/ last Monday. Meanwhile, the wreckage of the is still in the ditch while thw police and its collaborators are considering the best strategies to adopt in retrieving it from the deep valley.
