Retirees urged to use their expertise to aid gov't execute its policies

The Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari had implored all senior citizens to bring their knowledge and expertise to aid government to execute its flagship policies and programs. 

He observed that most retirees possess worth of experience when well tapped can help push forward the country’s developmental agenda. 

Mr. Bukari made the appeal on the occasion of the Republic day celebration in Bolgatanga. 

The day which is used to appreciate the contribution of senior citizens saw some retirees being honoured for their invaluable contribution towards the development of the region. 57 years ago, Ghana attained a republican status. 

This memorable day mark an indelible feat in the annals of the country’s political history and had since been designated as senior citizen’s day. 

It is a day when revered pensioners are called upon to dine wine and fraternize with political heads including the President and Ministers of State. 

In Bolgatanga, the day was held at the Regional Minister’s residency. 

In attendance were retired military officers as well as past Municipal and District Chief Executives among other functionaries. 

Also present were heads of various institutions including the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Redeemer Vincent Dedjo. 

Addressing the gathering, the Upper East Regional Minister acknowledged the tireless contribution of retirees to the nation’s development and called on the all and sundry to appreciate them while they are alive and not wait till they die before expensive funeral rites are organized in their honour. 

He further implored senior citizens to put their expertise to bear and aid government in the execution of its flagship policies for the sake of development. 

Mr. Bukari again challenged senior citizens to document their experiences or memoirs so that the youth and society can continue to utilize the knowledge. 

A Retired Educationist, Mr. Robert Ajeni, who chaired the function, entreated the youth to do away with the "pull him down" attitude and  have a change of heart.   

He said for development to strive, people should change their ways and do away with corruption and indiscipline, which he noted have been the bane of the country’s march towards progress. 

Participants were treated to a dinner dance that saw retirees singing and dancing to old tunes. 

They also received pieces of cloth and other gifts from the leadership of the Regional Coordinating Council. 

Some of the awardees include a retired staff of the Ghana Health Services, Madam Agnes Atayila, past MCE for Bolgatanga, Epsona Ayamga and the wife of late Captain Zanlerigu, who happens to be one of the bodyguards of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
