Chief Justice off to Egypt for African Judges conference

The Chief Justice, Mrs. Justice Georgina Theodora Wood left Accra this afternoon for Cairo, Egypt to attend a three-day Regional Conference of Chief Justices, Presidents of Supreme Courts, Constitutional  Courts and Heads of Judiciaries  throughout Africa.

The Conference which is within the framework of the strengthening cooperation between Egypt and other African countries is being organized by the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt in collaboration with the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development. 

It will discuss challenges confronting the judiciaries of Africa in modern times.

It is the assertion of the organizers that corruption has become a worldwide phenomenon eroding state institutions and the private sector thereby placing a heavy burden on the Judiciaries.

Participants will therefore discuss the role of the Judiciary in combating corruption as well as the protection of human rights and freedoms  while exploring the sources of individual rights,including the rights of political, ethnic and religious minorities.

Other topics to be discussed include the independence of the judiciary and transparency and integrity as hallmarks in the performance of the judiciaries of Africa. 

The various national codes for ensuring judicial conduct would be discussed to identify the common features and  whether there is the need  for the adoption of an international code of judicial conduct such as the Bangalore Principles.

The Chief Justice was accompanied by Justice Dennis Adjei, a Justice of the Court Of Appeal and Director of the Judicial Training Institute.
