Ghanaians in The Gambia are safe – Defence Minister 

The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul has assured the country of the safety of Ghanaians in the Gambia. 

He says the Ghanaian troops in the country have registered their presence there and the Ghanaian community are well secured and as such going about their daily activities. 

Mr. Nitiwul gave the assurance as he presented a statement on Ghana's participation in the ECOWAS mission in the Gambia. 

Following the decision by former Gambian president, Yaya Jammeh, not to hand over office to successor, Adama Barrow after hitherto conceding defeat, it became apparent for ECOWAS to send troops to ensure calm in the country. Of the 3900 force, Ghana provided 208. 

The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul told Parliament that there is an urgent need to resource the Ghana Armed forces. 

He said following the failure of the US to airlift troops, the country had to spend 450 thousand dollars to transport its troops. This he said delayed the Ghanaian contingent's participation in the whole operation.

The Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Derry said the success chalked up in Gambia is a testament to our democracy.

The MP for Ellembele, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah also praised the role former President Mahama played in maintaining peace in The Gambia

Following the peaceful transition in the Gambia, Ghana's contingent is expected to be reduced to 50.
