Parliament salutes Cape Coast Wesley Girls School on 180 years anniversary

Parliament has saluted the Wesley Girls High School, (WEYGEYHEY) at Cape Coast in the Central Region as the school celebrates its one hundred and eightieth anniversary. 

Presenting a statement on the on the anniversary, the Member of Parliament, (MP), for Atiwa East and an old girl, Abena Osei Asare, said the school needs to be applauded for churning out hundreds of industrious women for the country and the world. 

She particularly mentioned Dr. Mrs. Mary Grant as the first female medical doctor of the country and many other old girls who had chalked up feats in their careers. 

She commended government on plans in education administration.

The MP for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanator Rawlings, also an old girl, said the motto of the school has a lot to say about leadership.

For her part, the MP for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh said parliament should do well in ensuring that girls in deprived schools also get the right conditions to aspire to higher heights like the their peers in Wesley Girls High School.

WEYGEYHEY  named after the founder of Methodism, John Wesley
was founded by the wife of the 2nd Methodist Missionary to the Gold Coast, Mrs. Harriet Wrigley in 1836 with 25 girls. 

Her aim was to give the girls basic training in housekeeping and catechism. Subjects taught included writing, reading, sewing and religious education. 

Classes were held at the Manse, in the Standfast Hall near the Victoria Park in Cape Coast.

Meanwhile, new members of the House who did not participate in the induction seminar will this weekend have their turn in Koforidua. 

The Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu stated this when he read the business statement for next week. 

Vetting of the ministerial nominees will continue next week.
