GBC's Savannah Radio adjudged best radio in northern region Radio Savannah, GBCs Northern Regional FM station was last night adjudged the Best Radio Station at the ninth edition of the Northern Regional Tourism Awards. The Awards is the most prestigious on the tourism calendar in the region and attracts all top players in the industry. The awards seek to enhance tourism in the region by rewarding institutions and service providers who have who have contributed most to the development of tourism in the year under review. Radio Savannah was recognized for its unbiased news reporting and programming that has contributed to the peace and security of the region. The station according to the organizers has also contributed to throwing light on tourists’ attractions in the Northern Region. It is the second time Radio Savannah is winning the awards since the stations inauguration in 1996. The Northern Television Network won the TV station of the year while the Business and Financial Times won the best in the print category. Modern City Hotel emerged as the best two star hotel in the region. In his welcome remarks, the Northern Regional Manager Alexander Nketiah disclosed that tourism in the region remains a major contributor to employment, with the 2015 report showing over one thousand people directly employed. He said despite the tremendous strides the industry has made over the past year, some key challenges such as poor accessibility to tourists sites, poor service delivery and packaging. Mr. Nketiah therefore challenged service providers to improve their services whiles appealing to government and district assemblies to improve the road network to make tourists sites more accessible. He disclosed that, the Ghana Tourism Authority is embarking on a training program for waiters and waitresses in the region to improve on service delivery. A representative of the Northern Regional Minister, Abdallah Abubakari commended the organizers of the tourism awards for their efforts in improving the sector. He pledged governments commitment towards improving infrastructure especially roads to enhance tourism in the region. GBC
