UW: Regional hospital calls for increased voluntary blood donation

Voluntary blood donation is one of the surest ways of ensuring availability of blood at health facilities yet very few people are willing to donate voluntarily.

At the Upper West Regional hospital for instance only forty-eight people voluntarily donated blood in the first half of this year as compared to thirty-six pints of blood needed averagely per month.
 
The Manager of the Laboratory at the hospital, Samuel Oduro disclosed this to Radio Ghana at Wa. 

Mr Oduro said there are three main donors of blood to the health facility.
 
These are Voluntary, Mobile Session and Replacement.
 
He said replacement donors recorded the highest figure of 953, followed by Mobile Session with seventy-one. 

The Manager of the Laboratory said though there is no shortage of blood at the regional hospital there is a gap between total transfusion request, and total transfusion supplied.
