NSS receives "Commitment to Public Service, Quality and Excellent Service Delivery" award Ghana's National Service Scheme, (NSS) has received the "Commitment to Public Service, Quality and Excellent Service Delivery" award from the Italy-based other ways Management and Consulting. Also, the scheme has extended by six months the duration for the current personnel who want an extension. They may however, not be posted to their current stations. This came to light during the second in the series of "A Day of Gratitude" organised by the National Service Scheme for service personnel across the country. Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur expressed government's gratitude to the personnel for their sacrifice to serve the nation even in challenging conditions. The day of gratitude event was instituted last year to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of national service personnel to the socio-economic development of Ghana. It also serves as an opportunity for the personnel to share their experiences with their colleagues as they exit the scheme to explore other opportunities in the job market. Vice President Amissah-Arthur who recounted the genesis of the national scheme said, the essence is to ultimately build a nation where the personnel will appreciate the diverse cultures of the communities in which they are deployed for the service. By knowing and learning the cultural practices of others and understanding their way of life, service personnel will help build a better country where the people are united for a common goal. Mr. Amissah-Arthur thanked the Ghanaian youth and acknowledged their broadmindedness. He therefore, asked them to be at the forefront of public education on important national exercises such as the ongoing exhibition of the voters register and government policies and programs. The Acting Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Dr. Michael Kpesah-White announced that government through the Ministry of Finance is considering proposal for an increment in the allowances paid to service personnel. He said through various proactive measures, the scheme now makes prompt payment of the monthly allowances. Dr. Kpesah-White said through what he called the PEER program, service personnel are well prepared to fit into the job market either as employees or set up their own business. Selected personnel posted to some communities in the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions are grateful for the experiences gained and their desire to continue to serve in those communities. GBC
