Japan hit by 2nd powerful quake in less than 24 hours

Less than 24 hours after being struck by a big quake that claimed the lives of at least nine people, the southwest of Japan has been hit again.

A magnitude 7.3 quake has hit the same area where more than a thousand people were injured in a tremor on Thursday.

Saturday’s quake also triggered a tsunami warning but it was later lifted.

One resident told reporters: “It was just when I was trying to fall asleep, and I saw on my iPad that it was 6-plus, and I was very surprised.”

Aftershocks have continued in the region.

Japan’s nuclear watchdog says no problems have been reported with local power plants.

Fresh damage has been reported from the new quake but so far no reports of any further casualties.

Thursday’s quake had a magnitude of 6.4.
