MCE cautions Unit Committee Members not to parade as AM's


The La-Dadekotopon Municipal Chief Executive, Rita Odoley Sowah has cautioned Unit Committee members in the Municipality not to parade themselves as Assembly Members. 

According to Madam Sowah, per the Legislative Instrument of 1967 which backs the establishment of the Unit Committee Members, they are primarily to make special proposals to the Assembly for the levying and collection of rates for projects and programmes through Zonal Councils as they champion development at the grassroots. 

Madam Sowah gave the caution at the inauguration of the 50 elected Unit Committee Members in the Municipality. 

It will be recalled that the rescheduling of the conduct of the District Assembly Elections in March, 2015 emanating from a Supreme Court Ruling brought down the morale of contestants especially after spending resources in preparations towards the elections. 

However, the patience and commitment of the contestants towards serving their people has paid off leading to their inauguration. 

The Municipal Chief Executive of La-Dadekotopon, Rita Odoley Sowah, said Unit Committee Members ought to educate the people on their rights, privileges, obligations and responsibilities in consultations with the NCCE Department of the Assembly adding that they must also collaborate with the Assembly Members and the Assembly to monitor and mobilize members for the implementation of self-help and development projects.

Madam Sowah mentioned that Unit Committee Members have the responsibility under the guidance of the Registrar of Births and Deaths for the registration of births and deaths as well as organize communal and voluntary work especially with respect to sanitation. 

Madam Sowah however, urged the Unit Committee Members to be transparent and accountable to whatever revenue they generate in their capacity as Members of the Zonal Councils, explaining that it is with such revenues that the Assembly undertake developmental projects. 

The Municipal Presiding Officer, mentioned that the Assembly will soon organize training for the Unit Committee Members to equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills to perform their duties effectively.
