President Mahama Inaugurates Atta Mills Centre for Law & Governance at GIMPA

has inaugurated the John Evans Atta Mills Centre for Law and Governance at GIMPA in Accra to the memory of the late president.

President Mahama said the centre is a testament to the enduring legacy of the late president and his contribution to public service and the rule of law.

The President, asked that the Centre be use as the hub of law and advocacy that will illuminate the character of the late President.

The Atta Mills Centre for Law and Governance is a GIMPA institution of excellence,  established in honour of the late President of Ghana and Professor of law, John Evans Atta Mills.
 
       
President Mahama said President Atta Mills served as a dedicated and committed servant of Ghana,  and the naming the centre after him was not out of place.
      
"Rule of Law and Good Governance were core themes which Professor Atta Mills was passionate about, and GIMPA Council and the Executive Management Committee of the Institute, are pleased to establish the centre as a lasting tribute to the public service ethic, developmental and academic legacy bequeathed to the country by the late President."
         
President Mahama hoped that the centre would represent and come to symbolize the bi-partisan spirit in Ghanaians, to forge a common path towards future governance and the administration of justice.
        
The President said:"President Atta Mills was first and foremost a lawyer and a legal scholar with a distinguished career, spanning over 25 years as an academic professor of the University of Ghana."
        
He said the late President was a gift to Ghana,  and a statesman who served his country and died in the service to his people.
        
Professor Franklyn Achampong Manu, Rector of GIMPA,  said the centre, which would have research, teaching, and advocacy programs, is a Nobel one that would think out of the box to move Africa forward.
        
He said issues on social, environmental, human rights policies,  are major priorities of the centre,  and called on all stakeholders to play their roles professionally to succeed.
         
The Rector said the Centre was expected to generate interest in the relationship between law and good governance, to ensure participation and transparency to raise the image of Ghana.

The visiting Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbe, former first Lady Ernestina Naadu Mills, current and former government officials witnessed the ceremony.
