Bilateral Agreements Signed Between Ghana And Togo 

Ghana and Togo have signed Bilateral agreements in the areas of Agriculture, Transport, Maritime Security, Energy and Water.

Ministers of State from both sides signed the MOU which was witnessed by the two leaders President John Mahama and Faure Gnassingbe of Togo.

This came to light at a news conference at the Flagstaff House addressed by both Presidents.

According President Mahama, the joint projects to be undertaken by Ghana and her neighbour Togo is to further activate the existing economic and social relations between the two countries.

President Faure Gnassingbe is on a three-day working visit to Ghana.

Among his entourage is the Chairman of Togo's main opposition party Union of Forces for Change Gilchrist Olympio.

Radio Ghana's correspondent Pascaline Adadevoh reports that President Mahama briefed the media on the agreements signed.

These include Agriculture with a view to promote Aquaculture to ensure food security.

On Security particularly maritime, the two countries agreed in principle to stop drug, human and arms trafficking on the common ocean, which is the Atlantic.

This they intend to do by arresting people involved, doing the needed investigations and putting them before the law.

Other projects to be done by the two countries include the Juale multi purpose dam project, which is aimed at developing constant power supply to the Northern parts of both countries.

An MOU on the Sogakope-Lome drinking water supply project was also signed.

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe, was excited about the agreements reached so far.

He sees the move as a first step towards the much touted regional integration process.

Meanwhile it is instructive to note that President Faure Gnassingbe, is accompanied on the trip by the Chairman of Togo's main opposition party Gilchrist Olympio.

A question was posed to President Faure Gnassingbe if this was a step towards his country's reconciliation process.

He said efforts are underway with the country's Commission on Justice and Truth to initiate such a process but in the meantime, the country has realised the need to consolidate Democracy by allowing other political parties the opportunity in helping build their country.

The Main Opposition party Union of forces for Change, of which Gilchrist Olympio is Chairman has some its members holding positions in the ruling government.

Mr Olympio also responded to whether he still had Political ambitions.

President John Mahama and his Togolese counterpart Faure Gnassingbe, jointly inaugurated a shopping mall West Hills Mall at Dunkonah in Kasoa.

The Mall is a partnership between SSNIT and a private entity.

President Mahama, encouraged such Public Private Partnerships.

He asked operators of such malls to blend their products with locally produced ones to promote made in Ghana products.
