Ghana’s Ferrous Scrap Monitoring Committee Urged to Curb Illegal Export of Ferrous Scraps The Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has entreated members of the Ferrous Scrap Monitoring Committee to work much hard to curb the illegal export of ferrous scraps. This is to make the scrap metals available to the local steel industry as enshrined in the Legislative Instrument 2201 of 2013. The Minister said this when he appeared on the Floor of Parliament to answer questions posed by the MP for Akuapem South Osei Bonsu Amoah on steps the Ministry is taking to enforce the ban on export of scrap metals. The Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah said the shortage of scrap materials in the local market threatens the operations of the local steel Mill industry which has a total production capacity of about five thousand metric tons a day and employs close to five thousand people. The situation has denied government from collecting taxes and levies paid by the steel companies. It is for this reason that the law was passed banning the export of any scrap metal with iron or steel component. He said the Ferrous Scrap Monitoring Committee has achieved a lot in enforcing the ban. DR. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah said the Committee will be learning from the Ivorian and Nigerian counterparts the strategies they have deployed over years in stopping the illegal export of scrap metals. GBC
