Parliament Clears Air On Stoning "Adulterous" Women


Parliament has set the records straight on comments made by the MP for Daboya-Mankarigu, Nelson Abudu Baani allegedly on the floor of the Parliament. 

The Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul during the correction of the official report of the House on Tuesday November 18, 2014, drew attention to the fact that the contribution made by the member that day didn’t say anything about women who bore children out of wedlock being stoned. 

Even though Mr. Baani was not in the House to clear the air, Mr. Nitiwul appealed to the public not be judgemental as MPs would not have taken the comment lightly had he said it in their presence. 

He begun his submission by quoting what the MP said on the floor of the House.

The Majority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka said Mr. Baani had since apologised for the unfortunate comments made.                                

The MP for Tema West, Irene Naa Torshie Addo however took issue with even the comment Mr. Baani made on the floor of the House. She said advocating a punishment for women who had children outside marriage will be an affront to Parliament itself.

In making a ruling on the matter, the Speaker, Edward Doe Adjaho called on the MPs to always be attentive when their colleagues are on the floor. 

He said as long as the official report had captured it, and Mr. Baani was not in the House himself to correct it, it was up to the leadership of Parliament to find a way of resolving the matter.
