AU and ECOWAS welcome appointment of interim President in Burkina Faso

AU and ECOWAS have welcomed the appointment of diplomat, Michel Kafando, as Burkina Faso's interim President to replace the country's ousted leader, President Blaise Compaore.

AU chief, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, lauded Burkina Faso for the political maturity and sense of responsibility and called for a smooth transition under the direction of civil authorities.

Ghana's President and current ECOWAS Chairman, John Dramani Mahama, also welcomed Mr. Kafando's appointment saying these acts demonstrate the will of the people of Burkina Faso, its national stakeholders, defense and security forces to focus on the best interests of the nation.

The appointment of the former foreign minister and UN ambassador is set to end weeks of uncertainty after mass protests toppled the 27-year regime of President Blaise Compaore.

The naming of the interim leader came ahead of a two-week deadline by the AU for the country's army to return the state to civilian rule.
