Agricultural Sector Identified As Ghana’s Economic Backbone

Panelists on GBC's Current Affairs Programme, “Talking Point”, were unanimous in their submission that the agricultural sector is the nation’s economic back bone, hence the need to focus more attention on its growth. 

According to them, although challenges abound, opportunities therein should be harnessed to enhance the country's quest to a full middle-income economy. 

The discussion centred on the upcoming National Best Farmers Day. 

Commenting on this year's theme; “which is eat what you grow”, a Deputy Minister of Agriculture in charge of Crops, Dr Ahmed Yakubu Alhassan said it is appropriate. 

This is because, the country has what it takes to feed the people and not depending so much of imports. 

He appealed to the private sector to partner government to realize the potential of the sector through the provision of expertise and capital for farmers. 

For her part, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Benita Okiti-Dua said her ministry is collaborating with stakeholders to halt illegal fishing practices which deplete fish stock in the country's territorial waters. 

An Executive Member of the National Association of Farmers and Fishermen, John Dzinorun, assured fishers to obey the laws governing the industry. 

This will help sanitise the sector and give true meaning to policies.
