Start The Day with a Healthy Breakfast to Beat Diabetes People around the world are being asked to start the day with a healthy breakfast to mark World Diabetes Day. Diabetes is a long term condition that causes high blood sugar levels. The World Health Organization (WHO) called on communities to get together to share a meal. Observed annually on 14 November, it's also the day insulin, a drug that helps people maintain a normal blood sugar level, was discovered. Gojka Roglic is a WHO doctor who specializes in non-communicable diseases. "A healthy breakfast generally speaking would be including fruit, fibre, not refined carbohydrates, rather carbohydrates that have a low-glycaemic index. Unpolished rice for example, fruit and not much fat and that would be depending on the culture there would be a different menu constructed from these elements." Diabetes can shorten a persons' life by 10 to 15 years. Complications which accompany the condition include heart disease, stroke or kidney failure. SOURCE: Jocelyne Sambira, UNRadio.
