UN Marks 100th Anniversary of WWI Outbreak in 1914 & Armistice


The armistice at the end of World War I is being marked at the United Nations on Tuesday.

Representatives of the 15-member Security Council will hold a minute's silence at 11am to coincide with the exact time that fighting between Germany and the allied nations ended in November, 1918.

An estimated 16 million people died during World War I, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.

Gary Quinlan is the Permanent Representative of Australia to the UN, which currently holds the presidency of the Security Council.

"The Council will observe a minute's silence at 11am for the armistice. The armistice came into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in 1918."

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war in 1914.
