Fast depletion of Suhyen Forest Reserve due to illegal chainsaw operation

Forest reserves in the Western Region are depleting at a fast rate due to illegal chainsaw operation.

According to the leader of a vigilante group, George Yaw Hene, for some time now massive illegal chainsaw lumbering has been going on in the Moro and Tano Suhyen forest reserve in the Safwi Wiawso district.

He alleged that large tracts of forest reserves have been illegally exploited with the connivance of some forestry officials.

Mr. Hene said the survival and protection of forest reserves should be of great concern to all especially the youth who are the future beneficiaries.

He called for strict enforcement of laws protecting the forest, adding that if such illegal chainsaw operators and their accomplices are arrested and prosecuted, it will deter others from flouting the laws.

Mr. Hene called for effective ways to enhance the participation of fringe forest communities in the sustainable management of the nation's forests.
