Renowned Kenyan academic, Ali Mazrui dies at 81.

Renowned Kenyan academic, Ali Mazrui has died in the US, aged 81.

He is said to have died after being ill for several months.

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta said Africa has been robbed of one of its greatest scholars.

President Kenyatta said Mr Mazrui is an academic whose intellectual contributions played a major role in shaping African scholarship.

He was a professor at Binghamton University in New York.

Mr Mazrui is survived by his wife and six children.
