Uganda to push African agenda of UN reform


Uganda says it will use its presidency of the UN General Assembly to push the African agenda on the reform of the United Nations.

President Yoweri Museveni said this during the general debate of the 69th session of the General Assembly on Wednesday.

President Museveni said that Africa and individual African countries can form credible partnerships beyond the continent's shores.

"As you all know, the UN system needs reform to reflect the new needs and the realities in the world today. Uganda will use this time of its presidency to make a small contribution towards the reform of the UN and its organs in terms of pushing for the African agenda on this issue. Those reforms as will be agreed by all of us, will strengthen the United Nations not otherwise."

President Museveni said that Africa is at long last emerging from what he called "the long night of decline" the continent has experienced in the last 500 years.

He said during these years Africa suffered traumas including the slave trade, colonialism, neo-colonialism, plunder and in some cases genocide.
