Release of 45 UN Peacekeepers in Golan Heights welcomed by UN chief

The release of UN peacekeepers who had been taken by armed forces in the Golan Heights since 28 August has been welcomed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The 45 Fijian peacekeepers are part of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which monitors the 1974 accord between Syria and Israel after the 1973 war.

Stephane Dujarric is spokesperson for the Secretary-General.

“The Secretary-General emphasizes to all parties the impartiality of the United Nations peacekeepers. UNDOF is on the ground to monitor the Disengagement of Forces Agreement between Israel and Syria. 

The Secretary-General demands that all parties respect UNDOF's mandate, freedom of movement and the safety and security of its personnel. 

Mr Dujarric added that the released peacekeepers are currently at Camp Faouar, UNDOF's headquarters, undergoing medical attention.

They are reportedly in good condition.
