Government Denies Rescinding Decision To Setup Research Fund

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says government has not rescinded its decision to set up the research fund. 

He said there has been a delay in the setting up of the fund because of the stance of UTAG and POTAG over their 2013/2014 book and research allowances. 

Speaking in an interview with Radio Ghana, Mr Ablakwa said that as soon the payment is done the fund will take off in earnest. 

Meanwhile, a Professor in Laser and Optical Physics at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Paul Buah-Bassuah has welcomed government's move to establish a research fund but cautioned government not to use it for anything but for its intended purpose. 

He said it will be wrong for anyone to kick against the research fund as it has gone a long way to develop other countries. 

Delivering the inaugural lecture of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Prof Buah-Bassuah said the research fund should not be limited but must appreciate research in all forms, especially tapping the vast potential of scientists and technologists which will have positive impact on the lives of the people.
