African Hero Gyan Equals World Cup Record

Asamoah Gyan on Saturday scored his 5th World Cup goal in Ghana’s two all draw with Germany to equal the goal scoring record of the legendary Roger Milla of Cameroon as the African all-time top scorer in FIFA World Cup history and again became the first African to score in three consecutive World Cups

The 28-year-old skipper scored the second goal for Ghana, but the Germans drew level through Miroslav Klose’s goal to deny them of a famous victory in their group G game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Roger Milla played in 3 World Cup tournaments: 1982, 1990 and 1994.

In 1982, he couldn’t find the back of the net, but in the 1990 World Cup after he was called from retirement through the plea of Paul Biya, then the President of Cameroon, he managed to bag 4 goals at age 38, making him the oldest player to score in the World Cup.

He later broke his own record in 1994 at age 42, scoring his nation’s only goal against Russia in their 6-1 drubbing.

Asamoah Gyan is featuring in his third World Cup: 2006, 2010 and 2014. He scored his first World Cup goal against Czech Republic, which was Ghana’s first goal in the mundial under two minutes and eventually became the fastest goal of the 2006 tournament in Germany.

In his second World Cup appearance in 2010, the Al Ain goal machine scored three goals. 

The first goal for Gyan was against Serbia, before scoring his second against Australia and finally scored against USA.

The Ghana captain scored his fifth World Cup goal on Saturday to put him level with Roger Milla as the continent’s all-time top scorers in World Cup games.

The former Sunderland striker apart from equaling Roger Milla's feat of 5 goals, set his personal record of becoming the first African to score in three successive World Cup tournaments.

Again Asamoah Gyan’s fifth World Cup goal made him his nation’s all-time top scorer with 41 goals.
