FIFA Begins Disciplinary Proceedings Against Argentina's FA

FIFA has begun disciplinary proceedings against Argentina's football association after the national team were photographed before a recent game displaying a banner proclaiming their country’s right to claim sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

The Falkland Islands are a self-governing British overseas territory, which Argentina refer to as The Malvinas.

The banner, which read ‘Las Malvinas Son Argentinas’ and translated as ‘The Malvinas Are Argentine,’ was unfurled on the pitch before the nation faced Slovenia in a friendly fixture in La Plata recently.

FIFA revealed they were investigating the case, citing a statute that prohibits ‘provocative or aggressive actions’ and another regulation dealing with team conduct.

A statement reads: "FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened.

"The Argentina FA has been invited to provide its position to the FIFA disciplinary committee, together with any documentary evidence it might deem appropriate.”

FIFA insists the World Cup is a sporting event that should stay clear of politics.

Britain has controlled the South Atlantic archipelago, home to approximately 3,000 people, since 1833.
