Mr. J. B. Millar, was the first ever Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. He was an Englishman and was seconded from the BBC to set up what was then the Gold Coast Broadcasting Service and now Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. 2. Mr. William. F. Coleman 1960 - 1970
Mr. William F. Coleman was the first Ghanaian Director of what was then Ghana Broadcasting Service, in 1960. During his tenure of office the Service became a Corporation and he subsequently became the first Director General in 1968. Mr. Coleman took over the Directorship from the first ever Director, Mr. J. B. Millar, an Englishman seconded from the BBC to set up what was then the Gold Coast Broadcasting Service and now Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. 3. Mr. S. B. Mfodwo 1970 - 1972
Mr. S. B. Mfodwo was seconded to GBC as its 2nd Director General in 1970, and served out his two-year contract and returned to the University of Ghana to the position of Assistant Registrar. 4. Lt Col. J. Y. Assasie 1975 - 1981 Col. J. Y. Assassie served as Director General between Mr. Fifi Hesse's two stints. Col. Assasie served from 1975 to 1981, and Kwame Karikari from 1982 to 1984. 5. Mr. Kwame Karikari 1982 - 1984 Mr. Kwame Karikari served as Director General between Mr. Fifi Hesse's two stints. Col. Assasie served from 1975 to 1981, and Kwame Karikari from 1982 to 1984. 6. Mr. L. W. Fiifi Hesse 1972-1975 & 1984 – 1990 Mr. L. W. Fifi Hesse has the distinction of being the only Director General to have served twice. He first served as Director General as the successor to Mr. S. B. Mfodwo from 1972 to 1974. His second tenure of office was from 1984 to 1990. 7. Mr. George Aryee 1991 – 1992 In 1990 Mr. George Aryee succeeded Mr. Fifi Hesse, and served as Director General 1990 to 1992. 8. Mr. David Anaglate 1992 – 1995
Mr. David Anaglate, who served first as Deputy Director General became substantive Director General in 1992. He left GBC to become Ghana's Ambassador to Togo in 1995. Mr. Anaglate was the first in-house member of staff to be appointed Director General. 9. Dr. Kofi Frimpong 1995 - 1999
Dr. Kofi Frimpong followed Mr. David Anaglate as Director General, serving from 1995 to 1999. Dr. Frimpong was the last purely government appointed Director General, following the formation of the National Media Commission which is mandated to appoint Boards of Directors as well as Directors General for GBC and other media organisations. 10. Mr. Adanusa 1999 - 2000
Mr. Adanusah succeeded Dr. Kofi Frimpong in 1999 and served as Director General for a little over one year, until 1999. 11. Mr. Seth Ago - Adjetey 2000 - 2002
Mr. Seth Ago Adjetey followed Mr. Adanusah as Director General and served from September 2000 to September 2002. 12. Madam Eva Lokko 2002 - 2005
Ms. Eva Lokko has the distinction of being the first woman to head GBC. Ms. Lokko took over from Mr. Seth Ago Adjetey in September 2002. Eva Lokko was an Assistant Broadcast Engineer and the Corporation's first female engineer in 1972. When GBC made the transition to Colour Television transmission in 1985, she was the only female engineer on the team that went to Japan for training in the installation, operation and maintenance of Colour Television equipment.She was part of the team that installed the colour television equipment that is still being used today. 13. Mr. Yaw Owusu Addo 2005 - 2007
Mr. Yaw Owusu Addo, then Director of Radio took over from Madam Eva Lokko as head of GBC from 2005 when he handed over to Mr. William Ampem - Darko in 2007. 14. Mr. William Ampem-Darko 2007 - 2011
Mr. William Ampem – Darko took over from Mr. Yaw Owusu Addo from 2nd July 2007 after he was appointed by the National Media Commission. Before his appointment, he was a lecturer and a consultant at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He has an extensive and varied rich experience in leadership and management of business organizations especially in the private sector and academia. He has also worked, among other organizations, at the University of Ghana, International Tobacco (GH), ABC Brewery Limited and Pioneer Tobacco. The rest are Johnson Wax, Eveready (Gh) Limited, VALCO and Masai Group of Companies. He is an accomplished marketer, financial analyst and also has experience in change management, institutional development and ability to enhance performance. Mr. Ampem-Darko holds a Bachelor of Science in Administration (Accounting Option) from the University of Ghana, Legon and Executive Masters in Business Administration from GIMPA. He is a professionally qualified marketer and a member of the Chartered Institute of marketing (UK.). He is also a member of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (Gh.) and an immediate past member of the Governance Council of the Ghana Institute of Managers. 15. Mr. Kwabena Sarpong – Anane Apr 2011 - Oct 2011
Mr. Kwabena Sarpong – Anane took over as Ag. Director-General of GBC after Mr. William Ampem-Darko’s appointment was terminated by the National Media Commission of Ghana. Before taking over as Ag. Director-General of GBC, Mr. Kwabena Sarpong – Anane, was the Deputy Director-General of GBC. He has also been a Snr. Regional Director of GBC, Central Region. He was also the former Ag. Solicitor-Secretary and Snr. Legal Officer for GBC. Mr. Kwabena Sarpong – Anane was formally also a Part-Time Lecturer in Law at the University of Cape Coast and a Chief Examiner at the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Cape Coast. Mr. Kwabena Sarpong – Anane holds a Commonwealth Executive Masters in Business Administration (CEMBA) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He also holds a Degree in Barrister at Law/Solicitor from the Ghana School of Law and Bachelor of Arts including Diploma of Education from the University of Cape Coast. He also has a Certificate in Public Relations and Advertising.
16. Mr. Berifi Afari Apenteng Nov 2011 - March 2013
Mr. Berifi Afari Apenteng took over from Mr. Kwabena Sarpong – Anane as Director-General of GBC following his appointment by the National Medial Commission on Tuesday, November 1, 2011.
Mr Apenteng is a Media and Communications Consultant and a product of the Mfantsipim School and the University of Ghana. He holds an Executive MBA from the University of Ghana Business School and is also a Barrister at Law.
Mr. Apenteng is a Knight Fellow at the University of Stanford, USA, and has a wide ranging experience in media management. He was once a Director of Radio and Deputy Director of Television at the GBC.
He was also the General Manager for the first private television station in the country, TV3 Network, and Senior General Manager, GAMA Film Company. He was also appointed Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Limited, then lately the Managing Director of TV Africa.
17. Major Albert Don-Chebe (rtd) May 2013 -
Major Albert Don-Chebe (rtd) took over from Mr. Berifi Afari Apenteng following his appointment by the National Medial Commission on Tuesday, May 14th 2013.
Major Don-Chebe attended St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast for his “O Level Certificate” and Tamale Secondary School for his “A Level Certificate”. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ghana, Legon; a Masters Degree in English from the University of Manchester; UK and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Affairs from the Defence Information School, Indiana, USA. He is a lawyer and was called to the Bar in 2003. Major Don-Chebe has had a varied career, firstly as a lecturer in English at the University of Ghana. He served in the Ghana Armed Forces for 15 years in the Directorate of Public Relations. Upon his voluntary retirement in 1999 after a distinguished service, during which he participated in five peace-keeping operations under the auspices of the United Nations, he was appointed the Corporate Affairs Manager at Ghana Breweries Ltd. He later worked at the Ministry of Public Sector Reforms in 2005 as the Communications Consultant. He became the Head of Corporate Communication and Customer Care at Ghana Telecom and Vodafone Ghana. He joined the Millennium Development Authority as Director, Community and Public Outreach in 2009. Until his appointment as Director General of GBC, he was the Director, Corporate Planning and Communication at the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF). Major Don-Chebe is the current President of the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana and a Member of the Ghana Bar Association. He is married with three children.
